THE INCREDIBLE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF JAMDANI
Jamdani weaves, an ancient art that has been passed down through generations and remains almost unchanged, originated in the Gangetic Delta, Bangladesh and West Bengal today. Bangladesh applied for and was granted the GI and intellectual rights on the usage of the name Jamdani.
Jamdani is a form of embellishment on muslin - a cotton textile known for the fineness of its weave. The embellishment is created using the supplementary weft technique. Each jamdani motif you see on the fabric is added separately, one thread at a time, using fine bamboo sticks, during the weaving of the muslin! Weavers invest weeks or even months to complete a single Jamdani piece.
Traditionally, the classic Jamdani motif designs were not documented in any way. The designs remain in the mind of the weavers and are articulated, painstakingly, one thread at a time!
